Studio Art Studio art students are offered an emphasis in ceramics, drawing, glass, illustration, painting, photography, printmaking, or sculpture where they explore their individual voice and explore theoretical and technical considerations. Design Students can obtain a major or minor in the VCD Program that relates to current graphic design practice. The VCD educational experience involves a well-rounded fine art studio foundation with a design emphasis that involves the current practice, technology and theory of graphic design layout, typographic communications, identity branding systems, illustration, packaging, motion graphics and website design. Art Education The Bachelor of Arts in Education prepares students to teach art in Kindergarten through twelfth grades. The program includes a wide range of studio courses to develop creative ability, methodology courses for pedagogical competence and courses for understanding the philosophy behind and psychology of art education. Art History A BA in Art History offers a range of upper-level courses from the Renaissance to Late Modern periods. Through classroom lectures, discussions, and assigned projects and papers, students learn to interpret visual art using a variety of methodologies and contextual frameworks grounded in a critical understanding of the Western tradition. MAKE YOUR REALITY Art and Design students get a well-rounded foundational art experience studying and implementing the basic principles of design while also exploring their creative ideas and personal expression. From the first day, students are encouraged to explore, experiment, solve problems, and think critically so that they can make their reality at UNK. VIEW EXAMPLES OF STUDENT WORK SCHOLARSHIPS In order to assist students with additional financial support, UNK’s Art and Design department offers scholarships to both incoming freshmen and currently enrolled students. Scholarships are talent-based, requiring students to submit a digital portfolio of their work to reviewed by the scholarship committee. INCOMING FRESHMEN CURRENT STUDENTS STUDENT SPOTLIGHT LIBBIE CRAMER There are those students who not only make an art department stronger but they also help to raise the cool factor. Libbie Cramer is one of those students. As a fifth-year super senior within the Visual Communication and Design program, Libbie explored some other options before landing on design. Since making the switch from exercise science to art and design, Libbie has accrued several design awards and created stunning work for a wide range of applications from package design to scientific illustrations to children’s pop-up books.
